What is a wellness routine?
Health and wellness are words used interchangeably. However, they do not mean the same thing.
Health describes your state of being. Including your physical, mental, emotional health, and not suffering from illness.
Whereas, wellness is the action of improving your state of wellbeing. Aiming to enhance and improve every area of your life through healthy lifestyle choices.
Creating and committing to a wellness routine is not just about being healthy. It is about embracing and actively improving all areas of your life.
You can be healthy but still, strive for wellness. This may be because your health is not spread across your whole being and is often just associated with physical health.
Wellness encompasses your physical health, mental health, emotional wellbeing. Your spiritual, intellectual, and financial life, as well as your relationships.
This is achieved through various techniques. From simply including more fitness and a healthy diet into your life. To adding meditation to your daily routine for mental wellbeing and to reduce stress.
The best part about wellness is that is different for everybody. But, this can make it all the more difficult to find what works for you.

The benefits and why you should create a wellness routine
Simply having a routine in your daily life can provide many benefits. It can…
- Help you feel more in control
- Deal with change more effectively
- Help manage and reduce stress
- Reinforce positive, healthy habits
- Encourage constant progress through repitition
Now, when a routine is focused on wellness, it becomes even more powerful. Allowing your wellness to be a focal point of your day but on auto-pilot through the habits you build.
Additionally, having a planned routine means you can easily adapt it when things do not work or you want to progress further. There is always space for evolution and growth as you learn more about yourself throughout your journey.
A routine is also effective in achieving certain goals. Small or big goals can easily be targeted through a well planned and effective wellness routine.
For example, a small goal can be moving more every day. As part of your wellness routine, you ensure you walk to work. Providing movement for your physical health and time and space for your mental wellbeing.
As well, creating and enforcing healthy habits in a routine means you are constantly striving for wellness on auto-pilot. There can be nothing more confusing than trying to fit tons of activities in each day for your wellness.
Instead, you can be selective about what directly improves your wellness. Combining it into a foundational routine that you can build on in your every day life.
Tips for creating your personal wellness routine
Outline your goals
Often routines are made and stuck to because you have a specific goal/goals in mind. As wellness encompasses so many aspects of yourself, there is likely to be a few goals you want to target in your routine.
Therefore, identify and outline your goals with your physical, mental, emotional and spiritual wellness in mind.
Although, remember not to overload yourself. A wellness routine should be supportive, not stressful. Take on what you can manage right at the moment until those action become habit. Building upon it when you are ready.
Maintain a Morning routine
A routine for health and wellness can be applied to your entire day. You can break it down in more manageable chunks. Separating the day into focused sections.
One of these sections is your morning routine.
The way you start the day is extremely important to set the mood for your entire day. Feeling rushed and negative is not going to have a positive impact on your wellness.
Therefore, setting up an effective morning is a big part of your wellness routine.
But a morning routine does not mean getting up super early (but if you feel too rushed it may help). It is about waking up and using your time more efficiently.
The miracle morning is a great example of this. Using these 5 simple steps, you can create a powerful morning for your day.
- Set intentions for the day before falling asleep
- Set your alarm across the room so you HAVE to get up
- Drink at least a glass of water to rehydrate
- Brush teeth
- Shower and get ready for the day

Evening wellness routine
Do you suffer from insomnia, poor sleep or always feeling tired? I don’t know about you, but when I’m tired, I am not my best.
Sleep is a massive part of your health and wellness. Responsible for resting the mind and body, immune system function and protecting from disease.
To reap these benefits, you need to set yourself up in the right way… with a night time routine.
Sticking to a schedule is a significant part of your sleep cycle. Going to bed at the same time every night and waking up at the same time in the morning. Allowing you to enter REM sleep more easily as your cycle adjusts to this routine.
Also consider including warm baths and activities that relax you, like meditation or bedtime yoga. Helping you to release any stress and tension from the day.
I personally LOVE sleep meditation and it is an essential part of my night routine. It helps me drift off easily, fully relaxed and prepared for restful sleep. I use apps like Smiling Mind and guided meditations.

Putting away devices at least half an hour before bed is also very important. Melatonin, the natural hormone that induces sleep, is produced by darkness. So being plugged in can result in a struggle to get sleep.
Therefore, a focus on starting and ending the day the right way is key in your wellness routine.
Take on what you can manage
Jumping in feet first and overhauling your life can have detrimental effects on your wellness.
The primitive brain is programmed to keep us safe. Entering the unknown in a dramatic way cause more stress.
Leading to a ‘fall off the wagon’. Often making you feel worse about yourself and falling back into old habits.
A wellness routine is about creating positive habits. This happens over time and with practice. Strengthening new neural pathways and weakening the easier paths of old habits.
Therefore, be selective about what you include in your routine. Introduce it slowly and when you are comfortable, add new techniques to improve your wellness.
Trial and error
A wellness routine is not going to be perfect the first time around.
And that is okay! It does not mean that it is not working, only that some elements may not be right for you.
It can take some trial and error to find the right routine. Regularly evaluate your routine and how it is impacting your wellness.
- What is and isn’t working?
- Do you feel balanced?
- What are you struggling to stick to, are there alternatives?
- How can you improve further?
Ultimately, wellness is a journey. Continuously changing and evolving with you and your life. This means your routine needs to evolve with you.
Repeat this process regularly at the beginning. Then once every few months should be sufficient to adapt your routine.
Start your wellness routine today!
Hopefully, now you feel full of inspiration and motivation to create your wellness routine.
Health and wellness play such a massive part in our lives. Making wellness a focus in your daily routine will gradually improve your wellbeing and positively impact your day.
Ensure you outline your goals specifically. Addressing them in your morning routine, nighttime routine and day routine.
But, do not take on too much at one time or risk failure. Instead, take it one step at a time and succeed. Embracing trial and error to find your perfect wellness routine.
